DAOXIN CHEN
Designer & Traveler & Observer
Hey~ I' m Daoxin Chen, a recent graduate in M. S. Hsitoric Preservation program at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation (GSAPP), Columbia University. I have an intense interest in interdisciplinary studies that bridge design with the convergence of the material and digital worlds. This includes a focus on interaction design and the application of virtual and augmented reality technologies in architecture and cultural heritage.
PROJECTS
UX Design
Spatial Computing
Working Space
The Notion Notebook represents a new interaction system that is designed to improve the "presence" of the current Notion app. The general idea is to bridge the physical world and digital information by converting the wall, the desktop and the bookshelf into digital interface and realizing the functions of Notion in the 3D space.
Interaction Design
Art Installation
Arduino
The LuminLeaf is an art installation that enhances urban well-being by responding to emotional states through biofeedback. Using Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) sensors, it visualizes users' emotions with dynamic light and sound, adapting in real-time to reduce stress and anxiety.
XR Design
Cultural Heritage
Unity
The project involved creating a VR cultural learning platform that merges virtual reality with architectural heritage. I designed and developed the VR experience from scratch. The workflow included establishing personas and scenarios, conceptual design, model preparation, interaction design, and functional development.
Product Design
UX Design
Healthy Habit
This product is designed for people in NYC who don’t experience greenness as much as it would be good for their health. The habitat ring with an attached app functions as a green reminder, with the goal of building new habits of regularly going outside for the fresh air and greenness.
UX Design
Spatial Computing
Working Space
This project uses a VR headset as a research tool to explore the questions: how richness of environment (Ambient Sound, Material Expression) could affect people's attentional focus when they read an article, through designing an experiment with two different exterior contexts (Chinatown, NYC and Theo Goncalves, Saudi Arabia) and two different interior settings (Brick Room and Concrete Room).
MIT RealityHack
Virtual Reality
Hardware
In traditional VR training, while invaluable for learning new tools in a simulated environments, users often face a significant limitation: holding a standard hand controller fails to provide the weight and tactile sensation, which is crucial for simulating real-world tool usage accurately. HeaVR addresses this critical gap with an innovative extended hand controller.
Machine Learning
Architecture Renovation
Coding
How such a feasibility plan can be achieved using AI-based methods and illustrate some results on three different districts: Ditmars Park, Fiske Terrace Midwood and Prospect Park South. To provide an AI-based solution for the problem of placing solar panels on the most efficient surface of the building roof permitted by the regulations.
Digital Heritage
3D Scanning
Photogrammtry
We conducted a project of producing a 3D model for Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center, which belongs to Columbia University. Each of us did the photogrammetry for one bay of the interior wall and did 3D scanning for three bays of the exterior facade. It took us around five weeks to finish the project and use the model to do a building condition assessment.
Green Resources
Social Justics
ArcGIS
Relying on the ArcGIS technology and the public database, NYC Open Data, the distribution of street trees and open spaces in Harlem were mapped out in the basemap. The visualization of uneven distribution of green resources contributes to the discussion of the social injustics issue.
